Other Names: Thatch/Cogon Grass

Botanical Name: Chrysopogon Zizanoides

Family: Panicoideae

Native: Tamil Nadu, India

This giant grass can reach heights of upto five feet tall. Gregarious by nature, Vetiver grows in clumps in rich, moist soils, and even in water, under full sun. Not as invasive as other grasses which are laterally spreading, Vetiver roots grow deep, making it an excellent plant to control soil erosion. This plant is grown for its fragrant smelling roots which are used to make perfumes. Given its spectacular display when grown to maturity, this grass makes an excellent landscaping element in a garden. It prefers humid climates and is resistant to most pests. May be grown successfully in a large container and in isolation as it will keep growing out feeder roots and stems and tends to populate the entire growing space over time.

*Should not be grown alongside other plants as it is invasive.

**All our plants are organically grown without the use of any chemical fertilizers, fungicides or pesticides.

  • GROWING: Re-pot in a larger container to increase root and foliage growth when needed. Grow separately as this plant is quite demanding of soil/water resources. Trim off old, drying leaves from time to time and add this as shredded foliage around your plant to increase humus and soil health.

LIGHT: If growing indoors (balcony recommended), place in a bright spot with exposure to direct sunlight for at least six hours daily. If growing outdoors, place in full sun.

    WATERING: Daily through the year.

FERTILIZING: Our plants are sold in organically enriched, NPK+MagSulf strong, potting mixes that would need no additional soil amendments for at least one year. If migrating to a larger container, we recommend the use of Mandy's Farm Foliage Plant Potting Mix or one similar to it.
