Chives is a species of flowering plant ithat produces edible leaves and flowers. Closely related to onions, garlic, shallot, leek, scallion, and Chinese onion, the plant gives out long slender stalks topped by beautiful purplish-pink flowers that are also great for attracting pollinators. Chives are a commonly used herb and both the green stalks (scapes) and the unopened, immature flower buds are edible. This plant also has insect-repelling properties that can be used in gardens to control pests. Suited to more temperate climates, chives can be grown in Mumbai only during the short winters from November till February. It needs well drained soil and full sun for good growth. Container friendly. Pest repellent. Will start producing harvestable scapes and bud immediately. A great asset to have on hand for Continental cuisines.
