With 1,831 species, Begonia is one of the largest genera of flowering plants. The species are terrestrial (sometimes epiphytic) herbs or undershrubs. Terrestrial species in the wild are commonly upright-stemmed, rhizomatous, or tuberous. Many varieties flower profusely, and some even fruit. While begonia foliage is vast and varied, many of the commonly known ones are recognizable by their asymmetic leaves. Container friendly and suitable for Mumbai, begonias thrive in strong indirect light and can be grown indoors in a bright spot or outdoors in semi-shade. This variety is a hybrid and is easy to care for. It has a white speckled on dark green foliage with carmine red underleaves, produces petite pink flowers when in bloom, and is known as 'Sophie'.
